Ford Calumet Environmental Center sits on the south side of Chicago. After the decline of the steel industry, the site fell into disuse. Gradually, nature reclaimed the area; today thousands of bird pass through each year while traveling along the North America Bird Migration path. Studio Gang Architects’ building proposal combined past and present in a structure that would use reclaimed materials from the Ford Calumet area.

Within the visual identity and printed materials, the layering of nature over the post-industrial landscape is reflected in juxtapositions of photography and transparent overlays, using hues observed at the site.

/ Design Detail / Bundles of reclaimed steel formed an integral part of the building’s structure. The logo reflects one of these bundles, as a simplified structural and visual element.
